FunnelBrain Brings Online Student Collaboration and Learning to the Web
Academic Q&A with Video, Pictures, Wiki Flashcards, Student Profiles, and Study Groups Brings Learning Alive
Los Angeles, CA – January 6, 2009 – FunnelBrain, LLC announced the private beta launch of www.funnelbrain.com, a new academic question and answer website devoted to collaborative online learning. FunnelBrain, founded by seasoned Internet executives from Move, Inc. and education experts, has been quietly developing the new site for a year.
“Our focus is on fostering online collaboration among students,” said Joe DeTuno, CEO of FunnelBrain. “Students use sites like Facebook and MySpace to connect with friends and classmates, but the existing social networks lack some elements that are essential for effective collaborative effort.”
On FunnelBrain.com, students work in teams to create review questions and answers, paired with video explanations, for academic subjects. Wiki-style content creation tools and easy to use video, audio, text and images empower the group collaboration. “Group effort not only makes the task of assembling a comprehensive set of review questions for a given class much more manageable,” said DeTuno, “it also makes it a fun, social activity.”
FunnelBrain also provides students with a learning management application known as the “Funnel” that maximizes the effectiveness of time spent studying. The Funnel tracks and monitors learning progress and focuses the student’s attention on the right question at the right time with a spaced repetition algorithm.
“The potential for productive online collaboration has barely been tapped,” said DeTuno. “We think collaborative learning is a perfect use of that potential. Students already connect and communicate on Facebook. They already create and publish content on YouTube and Wikipedia. We are taking activities that students are already engaged in and applying them to collaborative learning.”
The private beta currently features review questions for popular high school advanced placement classes including: Biology, Chemistry, Calculus, U.S. Government, World History, Psychology, Literature, and Economics.
